High school students in McHenry County are doing what they can to make sure local governments do not waste energy.A dozen students from Woodstock, Cary-Grove and Huntley High Schools surveyed McHenry County municipalities to find out where they could reduce their energy use and produce less waste, and made recommendations as to how that could be done.The students, trained by local environmental advocacy group the McHenry County Defenders, audited the energy use and waste of nine McHenry County towns this spring. Four of them committed to make changes, such as using double-sided copies and turning off unnecessary lights.Lowering energy use and decreasing waste can save the municipalities money and decrease the greenhouse gas emissions that lead to climate change. If you recycle plastic bottles, for example, which are made of petroleum, then you don t have to make as much petroleum, which produces carbon dioxide, said Woodstock High School environmental science teacher Bill Donato, who is a member of the McHenry County Defenders and helped organize the project. When you recycle paper, you don t have to chop down as many trees, he added. Trees naturally pull carbon dioxide, the most prevalent greenhouse gas, out of the atmosphere.The village of Algonquin made the biggest commitment to reduce its energy use, Donato said. Algonquin officials agreed to implement 10 of the students recommendations.Village Manager Bill Ganek said it was not difficult to get support from the department heads to make the changes, because the Village Board had committed to become more environmentally friendly. ...
